Detach

Will not impose on your new life,
just need to know you are alright.
Did you turn on the outdoor lights?
or was it dark throughout the night?

Hate to impose but need to ask,
was I in love with a worn mask?
Is your heart numb? Did it turn black?
How did our love become a task?

Sad to impose, but one more thing.
Now that I left, does your heart sing?
Have you discovered your own wings?
Is life much better without strings?

Will not impose, focused with me,
with clear visions of what will be.
Standing as firm as a proud tree.
Floating like waves sailing the sea.

  1. wonderful questions Grace.
Reminds me so much of having children and letting go but wanting to know. love this last lines:
    💖🌻🌻🙏
“Standing as firm as a proud tree.
Floating like waves sailing the sea.”

  2. I quote Khalil (or Kahlil, as he anglicised it) Gibran’s “The Prophet”, which your thoughts brought to my mind:
“Let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”

  3. The entire poem is powerful, but those first two lines really hit me. I mourn my last relationship so much after all these years, and it’s hard not knowing if she’s okay, if she’s happy, if her problems worsened…I’ll never know, and it haunts me. Your poetry is so profound, Grace, and it really touches deep places. This one will stay with me for a awhile. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Mike. Detaching can be so tough. It’s always been so strange for me to see close relationships wither to the point of no existence. Thanks again for your kind words and for sharing. I’m glad it touched you.💕
