Cancer

Unwanted guest
that stayed too long,
was here to steal
his favorite song.

It took his strength,
and then his hair,
he kept his smile
and rocked his chair.

It took his pride,
and made him shake,
he kept his wink,
and did not break.

It took his size,
and then his mind,
he kept his heart
and was still kind.

It took his hopes,
and then his life,
he kept his soul
and glowed so bright.

My children sing
his greatest song,
it lives in them
where it belongs.

– Grace Y. Estevez – Reddy

Today would have been my father’s 79th Birthday, he passed away 24 years ago but always remains in our heart. So grateful to have had his presence in my life.💕🙏💕

  1. This is beautiful. However, I think you might have meant the unwanted guest that stayed too long instead of stood. Or maybe you meant stood and I don’t know what I’m talking about. Either way, it touches the heart.

Your father is always with you in spirit even if he is no longer on this earth.

  2. Grace — this poem is so touching. I don’t know if you remember this, but I lost my dad on October 16, 2022 from pancreatic cancer. He fought it for six and a half years. This poem hit so many spots for me, but it is so incredibly beautiful. My dad was only 68 years old. I miss him every single day, but I know he’s watching over me and my sister and making sure that we are ok. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful poem ❤️ much love to you on this day

    1. So sorry for your loss, my friend. Glad you enjoyed it and found it relatable. My dad was 55 when he passed. It happened very quickly. I still think about him daily. I know that both yours and mine watch over us. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. Hugs to you.💕🥰🙏💕

      1. Thank you, Grace. It’s a healing process that you never fully heal from. I’m so sorry for your loss as well. 55 is way too young. They most certainly do. You’re very welcome, and many hugs 🤗

  9. As i read the title of this poem i wished for a second too long that it was about the Zodiac. Even though, you wrote it so beautifully that it made me look back at my own loss with less bitterness and more pride in the strength she mustered all the way through. I am so sorry for your loss and thank you! ❤️‍🩹🕰

  10. What a beautifully written tribute, Grace! May your treasured memories live forever, tucked safe inside your heart 💞💞💞

  11. For those of us who suffer it is a battle that we have everyday, giving thanks for each day that we have. Somehow time becomes even more valuable when you know the struggle will eventually end in a battle you cannot win. I know how it must also feel to watch someone who is follwing that path.

  12. This a beautiful and tender poem and tribute to your father, Grace. I’m so sorry for your loss – you were so young, and with a little one to care for, it must have been an incredibly difficult and emotional time for you, especially with your father still being young, too. Cancer is so cruel. I lost my dad ten years ago to brain and lung cancer – it was a horrible way to go, but he couldn’t have gone on as he was. I’m so glad you can still feel your father’s presence in your life and that he is still looking down on you with love. Gentle hugs and my love to you, dear Grace Xx 💝

  13. A heartfelt poetic tribute! It’s really hard to lose father. I find it relatable. I lost my dad when I was 12. May his blessings be always with you, Grace ❤️🙏❤️

  14. That is beautiful.
You’re right, they are always with us.
It reminded me of something I wrote about mine a few years before he passed.
    If I may share…
“When did you grow old?” I said
but not so he could hear.
“With grey-white hair upon yr head and deafness in yr ear?
Once straight and proud and tall you stood.
    Now you stoop in pain.
At least yr mind still remains good,
Not quite as clear, but still, yr sane.
Just yesterday it seems to be that you were toiling ever.
Now all you want to do is sleep and talk about the weather.
    What evil creature is this Time,that’s taken ‘way yr youth;
yr vigor and adeptedness and left me with this truth?
The man who raised and taught me is still in you,I know,
But,when did you grow old?” I said
…and then I turned to go.

  15. This is beautiful and touching, Grace, and a fitting tribute to your father. I’m so glad you had a good dad. Not all of us do, so I’m happy to know your father was a wonderful fellow whose memories and influence continue to live on. Well done, my friend. 🙂
