Night Terrors

Wake up from a restful night,
complex vision blocks sun light,
heartbeat marches to pure fright,
giant monster in full sight.

Shadow view transforms to black,
blood pressure does jumping jacks,
equilibrium, out of wack,
beast growls loudly, windows crack.

Goosebumps come out for a peek,
cold sweat does not drip, it leaks,
both knees buckle, head feels weak,
paralysis feels so bleak.

Palms transform to water streams,
step outside, greeted by screams.
Try to breath, but inhale steam,
wake up from this frightful dream.

Open eyes then gasp for air,
chills raise follicles of hair,
pant away all tense despair,
back to sleep without a care.

Oh this was an intense poem. Loved these lines. Great response, Grace. 👌👏

  2. Hi Grace! As always, your words inspire so many powerful images in my mind! In this one, I love the way you keep us holding our breath until the very end, and then you completely relax us with ease, using so few words. I wanted to ask you if I can use this poem for an upcoming assignment at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I’m currently a graduate fellow at SCAD in the Film and Television program. The assignment is to create a video storyboard of sorts. It wouldn’t be published online, unless you’re okay with me putting it on my YouTube channel. I would send you a copy of the finished piece before I make it public, to ask your permission for that. Of course, I would credit you for writing the poem in the production credits. Thank you for sharing your awesome work with all of us! Scott

    1. Thanks so much. Absolutely. I was recently in Savannah and visited SCAD since my son was interested in attending. Best of luck with your upcoming project.💕
